Organic Cotton Labels
Cotton dominates global fibre production, however it is very damaging to the environment due to the large amounts of insecticides and pesticides used in its production. It accounts for approximately 25% of the world's total insecticide consumption, 10% of the world's pesticide consumption however only covers 2.5% of the worlds cultivated land. Chemicals such as these pollute the surrounding air, soil and water. Organic Cotton isn't sprayed with either of these chemicals which dramatically decreases the overall environmental impact.
The price for Organic cotton is marginally higher because the crop is more susceptible to pests and therefore has a lower yield per year.
The steps involved in producing organic cotton are as follows:
Organic cotton uses the same methods as conventional cotton, without the use of pesticides and insecticides.
- Cleaning: Once the cotton has been picked it is ginned - a process that separates the cotton from seeds and debris
- Sorting: The cotton is then aligned and sorted by fibre strength. The strong fibres are separated from the weaker fibres and the weaker fibres are discarded
- Spinning: Finally the yarn is spun into yarn and rolled into spools
