Bamboo Labels
Bamboo is a very environmentally friendly plant that is both renewable and sustainable. It grows 30% faster than the fastest growing tree with new canes reaching full height within 8-10 weeks. Pesticides or fertilisers are not required as bamboo contains a natural anti bacterial property called "bamboo kun". In addition to this, the yield per hectare for bamboo is 60 tonnes which greatly exceeds the 20 tonne yield per hectare of trees. All garments manufactured from 100% bamboo are biodegradable and will therefore rapidly breakdown should they end up in a landfill site.
The steps that are involved to produce Bamboo Yarn are as follows:
- Extraction: The inner pith is extracted from the bamboo trunk by crushing the bamboo and soaking it in Sodium Hydroxide until individual fibres of the bamboo are released
- Cleaning: The Bamboo pulp is run through a series of filters that remove unwanted contaminants. The pulp is then bleached to turn it white
- Spinning: The pulp is soaked in an acid bath which hardens the bamboo to ensure the fibres are easier to use. The fibres are spun to form a yarn and are rolled onto ready to use spools
Although some chemicals are used to manufacture bamboo yarn, harsh chemicals such as chlorine bleach are avoided. Sodium Hydroxide is used, but if used in a responsible manner has no detrimental effect on the environment.
